Astrid's Work - Commonwealth Institute

The Commonwealth Institute 1973

It was not long before Gardner once again needed the skills of Astrid.

In 1973 there was a commission from the Commonwealth Institute in London for which Astrid provided a group of elephants (approx 2 feet high) and a sampan (approx 2 feet long).

Since that date the Commonwealth Institute has been moved to Bristol and renamed The Empire and Commonwealth Museum.

Just what happened to Astrid’s work in this move I am trying to determine, but recent answers to my enquiries would indicate that there are no records of these pieces. They find this odd, since unused work was normally returned to the artist. It is my feeling that Astrid’s work for this exhibition was never correctly attributed to her, (as has have found in other Gardner exhibitions), and in consequence may now be lost.

It has been a poignant joy to create this website - joyful because my partner and I so loved Astrid, but poignant because remembering her reminds us of her loss. Yet her exuberance, innocence, and love of life is captured for all time in her work.

We hope you have enjoyed visiting this site, and we would invite anyone who knew Astrid or her work to share anectdotes of her life, and to allow us the pleasure of including more photos of her work on this site (with links to you and acknowledgemenst if you wish).
