Astrid's Work - Expo 1970

The Eindhoven Museum and Expo 70 – both commissions from James Gardner

The work commissioned for the Philips Company’s Evoloun Museum in Eindhoven I missed completely. Although I have conducted a fair amount of research, I can find no records of Astrid’s work for this museum.

That Gardner’s input was important can be deduced from the web site at:

http://www.dse.nl/~evoluon/historie-e.htm

though there is no mention of Astrid’s contribution.

Since this museum has now been turned into a conference centre, I fear that Astrid’s work will by now have been lost, although there is always the chance that some piece is still around.

Expo 70 was another major design commission for James Gardner, this time in Osaka, Japan. Astrid’s contribution here was a life size classroom of children in a primary school, based on a school in Welwyn.

This was another event that I missed, but at a latter date I did capture, almost by accident, the maquettes that had found their way onto the wall at Astrid’s Willes Road studio.

Astrid did go to Osaka to set up the exhibit and the stories of her adventures in Japan have entertained many guests at her evening dinners.

It has been a poignant joy to create this website - joyful because my partner and I so loved Astrid, but poignant because remembering her reminds us of her loss. Yet her exuberance, innocence, and love of life is captured for all time in her work.

We hope you have enjoyed visiting this site, and we would invite anyone who knew Astrid or her work to share anectdotes of her life, and to allow us the pleasure of including more photos of her work on this site (with links to you and acknowledgemenst if you wish).
