Astrid's Work - Thomas More

Thomas More 1967

In 1967 there was a competition to provide a statue of Sir Thomas More to stand outside Chelsea Old Church in London.

Astrid entered and created a maquette for consideration.

Sadly, Astrid’s entry was turned down in favour of another artist, but it is significant that this was by no means a unanimous decision of the selection committee. In fact the criticism levelled at the chosen works precipitated the resignation of Sit John Rothenstein. All of which was reported in the Times Diary on the 18th August 1968.

However, Astrid’s efforts were not wholly wasted. Her creation attracted a great deal of positive feedback and most certainly helped with future commissions.

It has been a poignant joy to create this website - joyful because my partner and I so loved Astrid, but poignant because remembering her reminds us of her loss. Yet her exuberance, innocence, and love of life is captured for all time in her work.

We hope you have enjoyed visiting this site, and we would invite anyone who knew Astrid or her work to share anectdotes of her life, and to allow us the pleasure of including more photos of her work on this site (with links to you and acknowledgemenst if you wish).
