Astrid's Work - Winston Churchill

Churchill Bronze 1971 commissioned by James Gardner

The then Sultan of Brunei had been a great fan of Sir Winston Churchill and Gardner was commissioned to organise a memorial in Brunei to celebrate this fact.

This may be a little potted history, but I have not been able to discover exactly what circumstances let to this commission.

Significant for Astrid was the commissioning of an eight foot high bronze of Sir Winston that was sent to Brunei as the centre piece of the show.

Trying to find out exactly what has happened to it has once again drawn a blank. Letters to the present Sultans office have not been answered, and it is difficult to see whom else to approach.

These photographs were taken at the foundry just prior to the work being despatched.

It has been a poignant joy to create this website - joyful because my partner and I so loved Astrid, but poignant because remembering her reminds us of her loss. Yet her exuberance, innocence, and love of life is captured for all time in her work.

We hope you have enjoyed visiting this site, and we would invite anyone who knew Astrid or her work to share anectdotes of her life, and to allow us the pleasure of including more photos of her work on this site (with links to you and acknowledgemenst if you wish).
